Week 2 objective

Tinkering is all about making, so let's get started. In this module we begin with a basic circuit board activity, which helps learners make physical and conceptual connections between electrical components. You will learn how to build your own set to play with and why we designed it this way.

My product

The electric omponents showed in this week's videos are fixed to wooden bases, an electric bulb, a battery and a switch.

I have put them together but I haven't got a switch, which I'll buy soon and will add later.

I've used a recycled cardpaper container of raddish that I covered with yellow paper around and on top glued orange Eva material. I've glued inside in the back some foam and fixed the bulb with two pins (blue round head). I've fixed the battery with velcro, so that I can remove the battery for other projects.

I've cut two pieces of wire to connect the bulb to the battery. Later on I'l connect a switch.

In the meantime, I've explored other Youtube channels related to tinkering and I've found an interesting one Ivydale Science & Technology from which I've borrowed the idea and template for my cam driven cardboard toy. Wooden cams work better but I've improvised with cardboard ones.

Automata and kinetic mechanisms

I've being exploring automata and its mechanisms and I find them very exciting to introduce children and students to the physics of movement.

I found great sites and videos, some are vintage toys  with levels of sophistication regarding the mechanisms and others simple cardboard toys one can make with children.

Then I found videos simply showing the mechanisms, which are great to think about designing toys.

This is a great placard with different mechanisms that a teacher can reproduce to explain levers, cams and other devices that produce movement, the idea is quite versatile -  https://vimeo.com/142410721 -
